Los Angeles Harbor Light Wikipedia

Although it was erected upon a 300-foot ridge above the ocean, it was later removed from its original place and put on a lower elevated point near the Point Bonita tip. On sunny days, enjoy the magnificent views overlooking San Diego and visit the lighthouse that has been restored to its original looks. If you’re a boat person who savors the faint scent of diesel, however, you’ll want to book Walter’s Room, a small bedroom and sitting room in the fog signal building. The bathroom is 25 feet away, but a barn-style door opens to a patio and spectacular view and there are no shared walls.

Weller assisted the two men to the lighthouse, where they were given food, shelter, and dry clothing before they could be returned to their vessel the next day. Almost as tall as Pigeon Point lighthouse, the Point Arena lighthouse is one of the most iconic figures of the American Pacific Coast. Unlike the Pigeon Point lighthouse, however, it allows visitors to climb up the tower for an awesome lighthouse experience.

Maybe it is their immense importance in keeping ships from disaster, or their constancy – their beacons shining for decades. Or maybe it is the image of the life, solitude, and responsibility of a lighthouse keeper. Or perhaps it is simply how dreamy and romantic they seem, with a backdrop of sun, sea, and ocean bluffs. Whatever it is, we think a long day of visiting these awesome, historic lighthouses in Southern California is a perfect little coastal road trip. It's been shaken by earthquakes and swamped by a tidal wave, but Battery Point Lighthouse is still standing. Built in 1856, this lighthouse is quite literally a house with a light on it, instead of the towering column structures that most lighthouses resemble.

Modern day usage

The non-restricted areas include the lighthouse (except lantern room), museum, and street leading to lighthouse. The lighthouse is located just off of Highway 1, about 15 minutes south of the iconic Bixby Bridge in Big Sur. Some lighthouses such as the ones at St. George Reef and Mile Rocks are far offshore and are best viewed through binoculars from the nearest mainland beaches. A couple lighthouses, Point Montara and Pigeon Point, have hostels in the old lighthouse buildings so you can stay overnight on-site.

They also offer moonlight tours, ghost hunts, and Halloween tours. Enjoy watching the sunset and then rise by staying in one of the former lighthouse keepers and assistant’s homes. Located at the southern tip of the Point Reyes National Seashore, this lighthouse offers guests some of the best Northern California scenery.

The Lighthouses of California & How to Visit Them

First they got the light station added to the National Register of Historic Places. Then they launched a campaign to restore the compound and run the keepers’ residence as a bed-and-breakfast. It would be a nonprofit operation, with proceeds paying for maintenance. From 1873 until the 1960s, East Brother Island was home to a manned lighthouse, using its beacon and horn to guide ships through the often-foggy strait that connects San Francisco Bay to San Pablo Bay.

Only vehicles authorized by the USCG are allowed on the property. The nearest public restrooms are at the city's Point Vicente Interpretive Center next door. The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps assists at the open houses at the entrance gate access, in the Lighthouse and USCG museum, and perimeter sentry, keeping the public away from restricted areas. Some restricted areas include the lighthouse top floor (lantern room), the lawn, and the two streets leading to the USCG houses.

It's located on a private peninsula in Kingstown, Rhode Island, and has a three-car garage, an oceanfront swimming pool, several fireplaces and a sunroom. It was listed for sale for $6.45 million in July 2012, but the price was reduced and the listing was removed in November 2013. For hundreds of years, lighthouses have guided sailors safely around hazards and into harbors. Although many became obsolete with the arrival of the GPS and other navigational tools, some lighthouses have found new life as private homes.

Point Conception Lighthouse

The entire island, along with a property on the Michigan mainland with an office and parking for guests, is for sale for $1.495 million. This lighthouse is located on its own private island on the St. Mary's River between Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Canada. The 2,000-square-foot lighthouse was built in 1892 and decommissioned in 1922.

The stucco that covers the upper two-thirds of the lighthouse was also repaired and painted. This work wrapped up just in time to celebrate the lighthouse’s centennial in 2013. A centennial celebration was held on October 27, 2013, during which 242 guests were taken out for a close-up view of the restored lighthouse. In another incident, Conklin claims that a keeper was startled one night, when a tremendous blow was delivered to the base of the tower. Scrambling to the window, the amazed keeper saw the silhouette of a large Navy ship, which had rammed the breakwater.

The lighthouse was manned until 1971 when it was automated by a remote electronic aids-to-navigation monitoring system. The first two keepers at the Point Fermin Light were sisters Mary and Ella Smith. They were joint lightkeepers for the first eight years of the lighthouse’s service, and not the last sisters to take care of this place. In 1925, sisters Thelma and Juanita Austin took over care of the lighthouse after their father (the lighthouse keeper at that time) and mother both passed away.

Whenever Alcatraz Island is mentioned, it is of the infamous Alcatraz prison that we are reminded of. It has a large deck and a sunroom and, according to reviewers, is located close to waterfalls and forest hiking trails. It has seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a library, an indoor sauna and several fireplaces. It's also rumored to be haunted by five ghosts, including William Prior, the first light keeper.

Of the 30 lighthouses, 16 are open to the public, and six have overnight accommodations in case you want a unique way to stay the night in California. That night it rained and the light station’s modern foghorn sounded every 30 seconds, as it routinely does from October to April. But it’s a mellow sound, like the call of an owl from across the street. Though the inn supplies earplugs, I was never tempted to reach for them. The compound is surrounded by a white picket fence, as if this were just another slice of residential Americana. Charity Elmore leads guests on a tour that advances from the inn’s stately rooms — ready for an Agatha Christie mystery to break out at any moment — to the lighthouse tower and widow’s walk up top.

Most people who are stopping at Piedras Blancas on the Central Coast come to see the hoard of resident elephant seals who occupy the beach, but completely miss out on the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse. It's easy to overlook since the top section with the light has been removed and it's now just an unlit tower. Its fresnel lens was removed and is currently on view on Main Street in nearby Cambria, next to the Lawn Bowling Club.
